Christmas is a season filled with wonder — the lights, the laughter, the joy, and the moments that take our breath away. But the truest wonder of Christmas goes far beyond the decorations and the gifts we unwrap. It’s found in the story of Jesus — a story full of beauty, mystery, and awe.
Jesus is God’s WONDERful gift to us. Wrapped in hope and love, a gift that our world desperately needs. We live in a broken world, surrounded by broken lives, relationships and systems. We see this all around us and in our own lives as well. Brokenness is the result of sin - the things that people have done and will do, that hurt ourselves, others and God. Brokenness leads to a place of realizing a need for something greater.
Because of his love, God did not leave us in our brokenness. He gave us Jesus. It is this great gift, Jesus’ birth, that we celebrate at Christmas.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
John 3:16
Over 2000 years ago, God gave us Jesus through an incredible miracle. Jesus’ mum was called Mary, and before he was born, God sent an angel to see her. We read their conversation in Luke, a book in the Bible that is an account of Jesus’ life:
[The angel] Gabriel appeared to [Mary] and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!” Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!”
Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.”
The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God.”
Luke 1:28-38
The angel’s promises came true! Mary fell pregnant, even though she was a virgin. This was a miracle that only God could do! Her husband Joseph needed to travel to Bethlehem for a census, and so Jesus was born there. The Son of God came to Earth as a humble baby, born in a stable because there was no other place for them to stay. His birth fulfilled many promises that God had made to his people over many centuries.
Jesus, God in human flesh and the greatest gift ever given, came to us and lived perfectly according to God’s design.
When Jesus was in his 30s, He started to teach other people about God. He travelled around, performing incredible miracles. He healed the blind, the lame, the sick, drove out demons – he even raised people from the dead! He showed love and kindness to all people. Crowds gathered to hear Him speak, and people committed their life to following Him and learning how to live His way.
We read in the Bible that while Jesus lived a blameless life, He was charged with crimes and sentenced to be crucified on a cross. This was actually God’s plan. It is why Jesus is such a great gift. Jesus did for us what we cannot do for ourselves. He took our sin and shame to the cross, paying the penalty of our sin by His death. Jesus was then raised from the dead to provide the only way for us to be rescued and restored to a relationship with God.
"For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him."
John 3:17
Simply hearing about this good gift, is not enough. We don’t have the power to escape the brokenness on our own.
We need to admit our sinful brokenness and ask God to forgive us – turning from sin to trust completely in Jesus. This is what it means to repent and believe.
Believing, we receive the gift of new life through Jesus and God turns our lives in a new direction.
By receiving this gift of Jesus, God restores our relationship to Him. We begin to discover meaning and purpose in a broken world. Now we can pursue God’s design in all areas of our lives. And even when we fall, we understand God’s pathway to be restored – turning to Jesus.
When we invite Jesus to come in and lead our lives, when we make Him our Saviour and Lord, we are then filled with the Holy Spirit – the presence of God. God’s spirit empowers us to pursue His design and assures us of His presence in this life and for all eternity.
