Introducing a bible study resource to dive deeper into this sermon series

Here you will find questions to explore in life groups or on your own. Each set includes a scripture and some thought-provoking questions to help you unpack the themes of the series and grow in your faith and relationship with Jesus.

Life Together

Life Together, explores the love story in the Book of Ruth, set during the chaotic time of the Judges. Despite pain and disobedience, Ruth highlights God’s faithful blessing and the powerful concept of Hesed—loyalty, kindness, and mercy. Through Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz, we learn valuable lessons on character, integrity, and relationships. As Ruth chooses relationships over gain, Boaz values people over wealth, and Naomi’s story shows God’s purpose prevailing, we are reminded of God’s unwavering love and faithfulness in our lives today.

Scripture Reading

Ruth 1:1-5
Ruth 1:20-21
Galatians 6:2
Ruth 1:6

Questions

  1. Honesty in Relationships: Naomi expressed her grief openly, saying, “Call me Mara... because the Almighty has made my life very bitter.” How can we practice similar honesty in our own relationships, and why is it important to be real about our struggles with others and with God?

  2. Challenges of Life Together: “life together” can be difficult, filled with grief, conflict, and disappointment. What are some specific ways we can support each other through the hard times, while doing life together in community?

  3. Hesed Love: The concept of "Hesed" is central to the story of Ruth. How does this covenantal love—encompassing loyalty, faithfulness, and compassion—apply to both human and divine relationships in your life? Where do you see examples of Hesed love in action around you?

  4. Humility in Relationships: The sermon suggests that Naomi’s family made decisions that were not in line with God’s plan, which led to hardship. How can we cultivate humility in our relationships, especially when we realize we’ve made mistakes or acted outside of God’s will?

  5. Seeking Hope in God: Naomi found hope in God, despite her seemingly impossible situation. How can we seek and find hope in God during times of relational difficulties or personal struggles? What practical steps can we take to turn back to God when things seem hopeless?

  6. Life Together with God: As we do life together, how can we include God (and the Holy Spirit) more intentionally in our everyday relationships—whether in marriage, friendships, or work? What would it look like to approach meetings, conversations, or conflicts with the awareness that God is present?

Questions

  1. Reflecting on IntegrityThe sermon discusses the concept of "wake," both in terms of tasks and relationships. What kind of "wake" do you feel you leave behind in your interactions with others? How can this be a reflection of your character?

  2. Boaz as a Model of IntegrityBoaz could have taken advantage of Ruth but instead chose to act with integrity. Can you recall a time when you or someone else had an opportunity to act selfishly but chose integrity instead? What impact did that choice have?

  3. Temptations and BoundariesBoaz resisted selfish or harmful actions when no one was around, we are called to do the same. Where in your life do you face temptations to act out of self-interest? How do you try to stay grounded in integrity?

  4. Expressions of Hesed (Loyal Love)Naomi’s actions toward Ruth demonstrate “hesed”—loyal love and kindness. How can you practice this kind of love in your own relationships, especially with those who rely on you?

  5. Living a Consistent LifeBoaz is described as living an “integrated life”—consistent in character whether seen or unseen. What does it mean to you to live consistently, and how can you work toward being the same person in all areas of life?

  6. God’s Love Through OthersGod can show His love through others’ actions, just as He did through Boaz to Ruth and Naomi. Can you think of a person who has shown God’s love to you? How can you pass that love along to someone else? How could you thank them?

Study 4

Life Together: How to be kind | Mark Wallis

Scripture Reading

Ruth 2:1-23
Romans 2:4
Mark 10:45
Mark 1:17
Acts 1:8

Questions

  1. HesedCovenantal love is driven by "what do I get to do?" rather than "what do I have to do?". Why is distinction important and how does it help us to be kind to those around us?

  2. CounterculturalBoaz chose kindness in a culture where most people were looking to control others. In your everyday life, what would help you to choose kindness over control? As a community, how can we help each other in this?

  3. EngageBoaz engaged Ruth despite the fact that she was a poor, Moabite woman. What groups (subcultures, personalities etc.) do you struggle with? How can you intentionally engage with someone from that group?

  4. ElevateBoaz showed Ruth how God and others saw her. How has God worked through someone to tell you a better story about yourself? What impact did that have on the following season of your life?

  5. EmpowerBoaz was generous to Ruth, but gave her the freedom to determine her own  experience. What are some ways we can be generous to the people in our lives without placing expectations on them about how they respond? Why is this important?

  6. God's KindnessGod's kindness leads us to repentance. How have you seen this in your own life with an emphasis on how God has engaged, elevated and empowered you? Spend some time thanking God for this and then share your story with someone.
