Preparing the Way

As Easter approaches, we take a journey with Jesus in His final days before the cross. Through His teachings, final meal, and time of deep anguish, we see God’s love in action, the cost of true discipleship, and the weight of Jesus’ sacrifice.

This series invites us to reflect on how God’s plan unfolds, even when it looks different from our expectations. We’ll see Jesus fulfilling God’s promises, ushering in a new covenant, and surrendering fully to the Father’s will. In His suffering, we find a God who understands our pain and walks with us in our darkest moments.

Join us as we prepare our hearts for Easter, deepening our understanding of Jesus’ sacrifice and the hope it brings.

Session 1

Preparing the Way - Passion Predictions | Mike Stevens

Scripture Reading

Mark 8-10

Questions

  1. Why do you think the disciples struggled to understand Jesus’ predictions about his suffering and death? How do we sometimes misunderstand or resist difficult teachings in our faith?

  2. Jesus calls his followers to deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow him (Mark 8:34). What does self-denial look like in today’s world, and how can we live this out practically?

  3. In Mark 10, the rich young ruler was unable to fully surrender to Jesus because of his wealth. What are some “blockers” in our own lives that prevent us from fully surrendering to Jesus?

  4. Jesus teaches that true greatness comes from serving others (Mark 9:35, Mark 10:43-45). How does this challenge cultural views of success and status? In what ways can we serve like Jesus in our daily lives?

  5. As we prepare for Easter, what is one specific way you feel called to surrender more fully to Jesus or serve others in a new way? Spend some time sharing and then praying for each other.

Session 2

Preparing the Way - Last Supper | Mike Stevens

Scripture Reading

Mark 14

Questions

Remembering the Past: The sermon emphasizes how the Lord’s Supper helps us remember God's faithfulness. Can you recall a time in your life when you saw God’s provision or faithfulness? How does sharing these stories strengthen our faith?

Realizing Our Present: Jesus knew the reality of what was in the disciples' hearts, including their doubts and betrayals. How does this challenge us to be honest about our own spiritual struggles? What steps can we take to surrender our weaknesses to God?

Redefining the Future: The Lord’s Supper represents a new covenant and a transformed future through Jesus' sacrifice. How does this change our perspective on our own lives and eternity?

The Power of Communion: The disciples could never see bread and wine the same way again after Jesus' words. Are there simple, everyday things that remind you of God’s presence in your life? How can we cultivate reminders of His faithfulness in our daily routines?

Jesus’ Invitation: Despite knowing Judas’ betrayal, Jesus still invited him to the table. What does this teach us about grace and how we should approach those who have hurt or disappointed us?

Self-Examination: The sermon encourages us to examine our hearts during the Lord’s Supper. What are some practical ways we can regularly reflect on our spiritual health? How can we respond to Jesus’ "alarm" when we recognize sin in our lives?

Session 3

Preparing the Way - Garden of Gethsemene | Michelle Stevens

Scripture Reading

Mark 14:32-42

Questions

  1. Avoiding Pain vs. Facing It with God
The sermon talks about how we often try to avoid or numb pain. How do you typically respond to pain or difficulty in your life? What might it look like for you to face pain with God instead of avoiding it?

  2. God Understands Our Pain
Jesus experienced deep emotional and physical anguish in the garden. How does it impact your view of God to know that He understands your suffering on such a personal level?

  3. Sleeping Disciples vs. Praying Jesus
The disciples fell asleep during a time of great need, while Jesus turned to intense prayer. In seasons of pain or pressure, are you more likely to "sleep" (ignore, avoid, numb) or pray? Why do you think that is? How could you choose to grow more in prayer?

  4. When God Doesn’t Remove the Cup
Jesus asked for the cup to be taken from Him, but it wasn’t. Have you ever prayed for something that didn’t happen the way you hoped? How do you continue to trust and surrender to God when His answer is different from your desire?

  5. Learning in the Pain
The sermon mentions “lingering in the discomfort” and how pain can grow our dependence on God. What’s something you’ve learned about God—or yourself—through a difficult season?

  6. Courageous Surrender
What would it look like in your life right now to courageously surrender to God’s will and strength? Is there an area where you’re being invited to trust Him more fully?
