Seek First

"Seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness..."Matthew 6:33

This year, we are answering Jesus’ call to Seek First—choosing to pursue God, His ways, and His Kingdom above all else. Through this series, we’ll explore what it means to live with holy desire, complete trust, deep dependence, and active obedience as we walk through Jesus’ words in Matthew.

Join us as we start the year seeking God wholeheartedly, looking beyond ourselves, and aligning our lives with His eternal purpose.

Vision Sunday Study 1

Seek First | Mike Stevens

Scripture Reading

Nehemiah 1:1-11

Questions

  1. Acknowledge: Nehemiah was deeply concerned about the brokenness in Jerusalem (Nehemiah 1:1-3). What areas of brokenness—whether in your life, community, or the world—do you feel God is calling you to acknowledge and bring before Him in prayer?

  2. Surrender: Nehemiah’s response to the news was mourning, fasting, and prayer (Nehemiah 1:4-7). What does surrendering to God look like in your life? Are there any areas where you need to fully submit to His will?

  3. Remember: In Nehemiah 1:8-9, Nehemiah recalls God’s promises. How does remembering God’s faithfulness in the past help you trust Him for the future? Are there specific Scriptures or personal experiences that remind you of His faithfulness?

  4. Ask: Nehemiah boldly asked God for favor and success (Nehemiah 1:10-11). What is something you need to ask God for as you seek Him first in 2025? How can you pray with faith and confidence in His plans?

  5. Participate in God’s Plans: Nehemiah didn’t just pray—he took action (Nehemiah 2:17-18). What “walls” is God calling you to rebuild this year? How can you step out in faith to seek His Kingdom first in your daily life?

Study 2

Seek First - Holy Desire | Michelle Stevens

Scripture Reading

Matthew 6:19-24

Questions

  1. What do you find yourself desiring the most in life, and how do these desires shape your priorities and decisions?

  2. Jesus warns about misplaced desires leading to disappointment. Can you think of a time when you placed too much value on material things or people’s approval, only to feel let down?

  3. Verse 24 states that we cannot serve two masters. What are some things in your life that might be competing with your desire for God?

  4. How does comparison and envy affect your spiritual health, and what steps can you take to shift your focus from unhealthy desires to a Holy Desire for God?

  5. What does a “heart check” reveal about the things you treasure the most? How can you realign your heart to seek God above all else?

  6. What practical ways can you cultivate Holy Desire and seek Jesus as THE priority in your daily life?

Study 3

Seek First - Complete Trust | Mike Stevens

Questions

  1. The sermon emphasises that "what we are devoted to will be what we worry about." What are some things you find yourself worrying about the most, and what do they reveal about your devotion?

  2. Jesus says in Matthew 6:26 that God provides for the birds of the air and values us even more. How does this truth challenge or encourage you in your daily worries and concerns?

  3. The sermon highlights that trusting God doesn’t mean being careless but choosing not to let worry control us. How can we balance responsible concern with complete trust in God?

  4. Matthew’s life was transformed when he chose to follow Jesus completely. What practical steps can you take to actively seek God's kingdom and righteousness in your daily life?

  5. The sermon talks about moving from worry to trust to freedom. Can you share a time when trusting God led you to experience greater peace or freedom in a difficult situation?

Study 4

Seek First - Deep Dependence | Michelle Stevens

Questions

What holds us back from asking God for things?

  • Do you relate to any of the reasons mentioned (fear of being a burden, self-sufficiency, past disappointments)?

How does persistence in prayer shape our faith and dependence on God?

  • Can you share a time when you kept praying for something over a long period?

What’s the difference between persistently asking and demanding from God?

  • How do we ensure our prayers align with God’s will rather than just our desires (James 4:3)?

Do you struggle more with asking or with trusting God’s answers? Why?

  • What does trusting God look like when His answer is “no” or “not yet”?

How does understanding God as a loving Father change our approach to prayer?

  • Do you see God as someone eager to give good gifts, or do you struggle to believe He cares about your needs?

Where is God inviting you to grow in deeper dependence on Him?

  • Is there something specific you need to bring to Him in prayer today—either asking boldly or trusting patiently?

Study 5

Seek First - Active Obedience | Mike Stevens

Questions

  1. What does it mean to have Jesus as your foundation? How can you ensure that your life is built on a solid foundation rather than one that is unstable?

  2. The sermon emphasises "active obedience" rather than just hearing Jesus' words. What are some practical ways you can actively live out Jesus’ teachings in your daily life?

  3. Matthew 25:31-46 highlights serving "the least of these" as an act of obedience to Christ. How does this passage challenge the way we serve others in our communities today?

  4. The Early Church demonstrated obedience through sacrificial love, even during times of crisis. How can we apply this same kind of faith and obedience in our modern world?

  5. The sermon encourages surrendering different areas of life to Jesus. What is one area of your life where you feel challenged to trust God more fully, and what steps can you take to surrender it to Him?
